If you’ve got a camping trip coming up, choosing the right portable electric freezer is essential. Not only will you be able to enjoy a wider variety of food and drink when on-the-road, but it’ll also be far more efficient than a standard cooler.

But which compressor model should you choose for your trip? Here’s the lowdown on everything you need to consider.

Size of Your Portable Electric Freezer

Perhaps the most important aspect of all is the size of your portable electric freezer fridge. You don’t want to end up with too little space to store everything you need – but neither do you want the hassle of carrying around an appliance that’s just too big and bulky.

But provided you’ve got a solid concept of how much each size can accommodate, you’re already most of the way there. One of the best ways to do this is by measuring how many cans a fridge can hold. This provides an instant visual representation of what your chosen size will cater for.

Here’s the breakdown:

25L and under – 27 cans

35L – 47 cans

42L – 62 cans

60 – 65L – 105 cans

80L – 120 cans

This makes our smallest model perfect for short solo trips – or even two people at a push. But if you’re going away as a pair for more than a full day, we’d definitely recommend the larger 35L.

The 42L is considered the most ‘standard’ size fridge, offering a decent capacity without being overly bulky or taking up too much space. Ideal on long weekends away for up to three people.

But if lengthy trips or busy events (sports games, parties etc.) are what you’ve got coming up, one of our largest models will be the best option. The last thing you want is to run out of cool drinks and fresh food with lots of mouths to feed!

However, if space and carriage is likely to be an issue, you could always downsize slightly by having two 35L or 42L fridges instead. This allows you to spread the weight more evenly by sharing the load.

Powering Up

The next aspect you need to consider is how you’re going to power your portable electric freezer. If you’re solely going to use it for big events and special occasions, an appliance that relies on mains power is probably enough.

But if you’re anything like me and love taking spontaneous camping trips for weekends away, having a portable fridge/freezer you can power on-the-go is essential. And luckily, all our compressor models provide just that!

Complete with a multi-socket car adaptor (as well as EU and UK adaptors), all our fridge freezers can be plugged into cigarette lighter leads. This allows you to easily charge your appliance in the car, making all our sizes ideal for travel.

However, unless you’re lucky enough to own the dream van lifer’s van, opting for a smaller model is likely to be your best choice. A big and bulky portable freezer will take up a huge amount of space in your vehicle, and could cause a lot of hassle in the long-run.

Fridge AND Freezer?

Unlike regular coolers, many portable electric freezer models offer a convenient dual function. This allows you to both freeze and cool your food, providing way more options than you’d get from a more basic appliance.

So, if you’re heading off on a long trip away with a few friends, a dual-function model is definitely worth considering! They may cost a little more than standard options, but you’ll definitely reap the rewards. Your food will stay fresher for longer, and you’ll be able to store a much wider variety of goods with ease.

And (you guessed it!), all our models offer this function with a temperature range of -18°C to 10°C. No matter which size you choose, you’ll be able to keep your food at precise temperatures for longer lasting freshness.

So, if you were unsure what to look for when choosing a portable electric freezer, you now have more of an insight. If you want a little more info about all the great benefits a compressor fridge freezer can provide, get the lowdown here.
